Fifteen largest container ports Europa 2023
The container throughput of the 15 main European ports combined accounted for 72.5 million TEUs in 2023. Despite almost all ports experiencing a decline compared to 2022, Rotterdam remains number one.
The port of Rotterdam is and remains the largest, busiest and most important port in Europe. It is the only European port in the top ten list of 'busiest ports in the world'. Last year, Rotterdam recorded a throughput of 13.45 million TEU, 7% less then 2022. This is the second consecutive year that the port ended with declining container throughput figures. Something that has never happened before in history.
The numbers two and three also recorded a 7% drop down. Antwerp-Bruges came in at 12.52 million TEU and Hamburg at 7.70 million TEU. Number four in the list, the port of Piraeus, along with Gioia Tauro and Sines, were the only ones to record growth. This is according to the top-15 published by port professor Theo Notteboom.
